Australia Weather

Located south of the equator, the seasons in Australia can be highly unpredictable. As it is part of the southern hemisphere, Australia experiences seasons opposite to those continents in the northern hemisphere. Summer commences in December and ends in February, Autumn is from March until May, Winter begins in June until August and Spring is from September until November.

Though the seasons are named the same as other countries they can be quite unpredictable and extreme.

The northern parts of Australia are quite tropical with high temperatures, high humidity and high rainfall. The top end of Australia generally experiences two main seasons: the wet season and the dry season. The wet season is usually from December through till March and features much hotter temperatures, higher humidity and a lot of rain which can lead to flooding. The dry season begins in May and goes right through until October. The dry season is usually when the tropics of Australia experience cooler weather.

The southern regions of Australia are more temperate with moderate rainfall and temperatures ranging from low to quite high.

Australia is generally a dry country because of its location below the subtropical belt. The weather is highly variable with snow reaching some parts as well as drought.

With extended periods of no rainfall there are parts of the outback which are often struck by drought, it is because of this that the country observes water restrictions (in some cases extreme water restrictions).

Bushfires are also a common occurrence in Australia with souring tempertatures during the summer months; adding low humidity to high winds everything becomes dry so the slightest spark can cause raging infernos.

With the erratic weather behaviour in Australia visitors can experience life on the coast where the beaches hold a strong surfing culture whilst inland Australia with it’s drier terrain will appeal to those looking for a challenging adventure.
